The Carabao Cup has a history of upsets, but few compare to the result at the Edgeley Park on Tuesday night. Fleetwood Town, a team playing in League One, eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal. The Gunners lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
The match was decided by a red card for Max Dowman. The 16-year-old winger was dismissed in the 60th minute, leaving Arsenal with ten men. Fleetwood capitalized on the numerical advantage, taking the lead before Arsenal equalized. The penalty shootout ended 5-3 in favor of Fleetwood.
Arteta managed the squad with a heavy reliance on youth due to injury. Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, and Noni Madueke were all sidelined. This forced the manager to start 17-year-old Marli Salmon at center back and give 18-year-old Ceadach O'Neill his debut. Goalkeeper Illan Meslier also started his first match for the club.
Despite the young lineup, Arsenal dominated the statistical metrics. The team recorded 78% possession and took 26 shots on target. However, they failed to convert that control into a victory. The game was interrupted for eight minutes in the first half when a drone flew over the pitch, an event that disrupted the flow of play.
Dowman had scored twice in the previous round against Ipswich Town. His performance in the Fleetwood match was marred by a reaction to a challenge from Harrison Neal. Referee Michael Salisbury awarded the red card after Dowman moved his leg toward the opponent. It was his second red card of the month, following a dismissal while playing for the England U19 team.
Mikel Arteta reacted visibly as Dowman left the pitch. The manager spoke to the young player in the tunnel, a moment he later described as reinforcing instructions given before the match. Arteta stated that the team was clear on the emotional demands of the game.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson criticized Arteta's post-match behavior on Sky Sports. Merson argued that treating a 16-year-old differently than an experienced international player like Viktor Gyokeres was inconsistent. He suggested that Arteta might regret his actions in the tunnel, noting that Dowman was a "human being" having a difficult night.
The loss extends Arsenal's drought in the League Cup. The club has not won the trophy in 33 years. They previously fell to lower division sides at this stage in 2012 and 2015. The defeat also complicates their schedule, as they face Liverpool on Sunday with limited options on the wing.
Arteta acknowledged the poor performance but defended his players' attitude. He noted that the team showed determination despite being down to ten men. The manager admitted that conceding a "really poor goal" gave Fleetwood momentum. With Dowman suspended and key wingers injured, the squad depth in wide areas is now a concern for the upcoming match.
