Mavericks Bank on $42.4 Million Irving Option Amid Flagg Build
With Dallas rebuilding around a 19-year-old rookie, the franchise holds a major financial decision regarding its veteran guard.

The Dallas Mavericks hold a $42.4 million player option for Kyrie Irving for the 2026-27 season, a figure that anchors the team's financial strategy as they rebuild around 19-year-old Cooper Flagg. This option gives Irving control over his status while the front office weighs the cost of retaining an eight-time All-Star against the benefit of preserving draft capital.
The situation stems from a roster overhaul that began in 2024. The Mavericks traded Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis, the latter of whom played only 29 games for Dallas before leaving. Irving arrived via trade in February 2023 and has remained as the team's longest-serving player after Dwight Powell was waived this preseason. The organization fired general manager Nico Harrison last November, and the current regime aims to establish a winning culture with Flagg as the primary focal point.
The business case for keeping Irving rests on his on-court chemistry with Flagg. Flagg averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 assists as a rookie, but his production improved significantly when paired with a traditional point guard. In a recent game against the Miami Heat, the two combined for 47 points and 17 assists. Flagg recorded 29 points and 11 assists in that contest, validating the pairing's offensive output.
Trading Irving would allow the Mavericks to replenish depleted assets, as the team does not control its own first-round pick for the next four years. League sources anticipate a strong market for Irving, who is 34 years old. A trade could provide the young core with additional depth or future picks, though it would remove a veteran presence from the locker room.
President Masai Ujiri stated that he believes Irving can succeed within the new system led by head coach Dusty May. Ujiri noted that the connection between a veteran guard and a young star is critical for success, citing his own experience winning a title in 2019. The front office may push trade discussions into next summer, where sign-and-trade or extend-and-trade scenarios could become viable.
Irving has expressed comfort with the transparency of the situation, noting that nothing is hidden. He acknowledged the 15-year age gap with Flagg but emphasized his desire to alleviate pressure on the rookie. The Mavericks' immediate goal is to return to the playoffs, a milestone they have missed for two seasons. The team will continue to evaluate the pairing's effectiveness as the season progresses, with the $42.4 million option serving as the central financial lever in that process.
