Four people were injured when shots rang out during a youth football championship at Madison Senior High School around 9:50 p.m. on Sunday. One victim died at the scene, while three others were transported to local hospitals.

The event was unrelated to the host school, though the violence disrupted the campus community. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis has taken over the investigation. Law enforcement officers are actively seeking witnesses and anyone with information about the incident.

Lt. Andrew Pierson, the public information officer for the Major Case Squad, urged the public to share any details they may have. “Someone in that crowd saw something, recorded something, or has heard something since. We are asking those people to come forward,” Pierson said. He noted that even a single photo, short video, or small detail could advance the case.

The school district canceled classes for Monday and announced that instruction would resume on Wednesday. In a statement, the district said it “is deeply saddened by the shooting.” The district emphasized that while it did not organize or sponsor the game, “this violence affects our entire school community.”

Counseling and support services are now available to students and staff. Authorities ask anyone with information to call the command post at 618-709-7750 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.

The investigation continues as officials work to identify those responsible for the shooting that occurred during the evening game.
