Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel died on Tuesday, November 3, aged 30, one day after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision during his club’s match against FC Andorra. The Spanish second-tier side announced his death in a statement expressing grief and disbelief at the loss.

The incident occurred when Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono came out of his penalty area to clear a long ball. His knee struck De Miguel in the chest, and the striker collapsed. The match was abandoned seven minutes into stoppage time after the collision, which resulted in Owono receiving a straight red card.

Players from both sides urgently called for medical help as De Miguel remained motionless on the ground. Medical personnel attended to him on the pitch for more than five minutes. He was then transported to hospital in an ambulance, a day before Tenerife confirmed that he had died.

In its announcement, Tenerife described the difficulty of accepting the death of Jesus de Miguel Alameda and the sorrow felt at the club. Its statement said there were no words that could offer comfort or ease the sadness surrounding his passing.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation, known as RFEF, postponed every match scheduled for Tuesday, including games in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina. It also cancelled the official presentation for Spain’s Under-21 international against Japan, expressing respect and solidarity with De Miguel’s family, his teammates and Tenerife’s supporters.

UEFA said all European matches this week would be preceded by a period of silence. Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal were among the Spanish clubs scheduled to play in the Champions League on Tuesday. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin expressed heartbreak over De Miguel’s death, saying: “We have searched for words and found only silence.”

Barcelona and Real Madrid were among clubs across Spain that paid tribute after the announcement. Barcelona offered support to the player’s family, friends and loved ones. Real Madrid conveyed its condolences and affection to his relatives, teammates, club and others close to him.

Born in Madrid in 1996, De Miguel moved to Tenerife from Castellon before the 2025-26 season. He scored 11 goals last season for the club now mourning his death.
