Baltimore Expands Free Basement Cleanup After Sewage Backups
The city's SOS program will now cover dry-weather system failures, not just storm overflows.

Baltimore homeowners and renters can now request free professional cleanup of sewage-contaminated basements after both heavy rain events and dry-weather failures in the municipal sewer system. Mayor Brandon M. Scott and the Baltimore Department of Public Works announced the expansion of the Sewage Onsite Support program on Thursday.
Previously, official assistance was limited to emergencies triggered by storms. The revised program, developed with the Maryland Department of the Environment, extends coverage to blockages and other failures in the city's sewer network that occur without rain. Residents who own or rent property affected by the municipal system can call Baltimore's 311 line to request service.
Local authorities said rapid disinfection is intended to prevent pathogen growth and reduce health risks for families in vulnerable communities. Sewage overflows can release microorganisms into residential basements, where standing water and damp surfaces create conditions for biological contamination.
The expansion takes effect immediately through the 311 call center. The city has not released a cost estimate for the added coverage. Property owners seeking cleanup assistance should call 311 to schedule an appointment.
