The Town of Mamaroneck has scheduled a public hearing to determine if local residents will grant the Town Board authority to exceed New York state’s property tax cap for the upcoming fiscal year. The proposed measure would allow the town to adopt a 2027 budget with a property tax levy higher than the limit set by state law.

The hearing is set for Wednesday, November 4, at 8 p.m. at the Town Center located at 740 W. Boston Post Road. The Town Board issued the notice for the public hearing on October 29. The proposed legislation is titled “Local Law Authorizing a Property Tax Levy in Excess of the Limit Established in General Municipal Law §3-c.”

The law would utilize authority granted under subdivision 5 of New York General Municipal Law Section 3-c. This provision allows local governments to override the property tax cap by passing a local law that receives approval from at least 60% of the governing body. The proposal does not specify the exact dollar amount by which the town would exceed the current levy limit.

If adopted, the local law would take effect immediately upon filing with the New York secretary of state. The measure would authorize the Town Board to finalize the budget for the fiscal year beginning January 1, 2027, even if the tax levy surpasses the statutory ceiling established for that period.

Residents have several options to participate in the process. They can attend the hearing in person or watch the proceedings on local municipal access television. The broadcast is available on Cablevision channels 75, 76, and 77, as well as Verizon channels 34, 35, and 36. The meeting will also be streamed through LMC Media.

The full text of the proposed local law is posted on the Town of Mamaroneck website. Individuals who prefer a physical copy can request one be mailed to them by calling the Town Clerk’s Office at 914-381-7870. The Town Board will vote on the measure following the public comment period.
