Barcelona have been fined 602 euros ($670) by the Spanish football federation for approaching Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, ending a complaint lodged by their La Liga rivals.

Atletico had accused Barcelona of making contact with the Argentinian, whose contract with the club runs until June 2030, without first informing them in writing. The penalty was issued under Article 133 of the federation's regulations.

Atletico also took the matter to FIFA, which responded that it had no jurisdiction over the case.

While Barcelona's punishment was minor, Alvarez has faced a far more public task in mending his relationship with supporters. The striker scored the winning goal against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, his second goal in as many matches, as Atletico closed to within two points of league leaders Barcelona.

After the game, Alvarez apologised for saying he wanted to move to the Catalan side. The remarks came in an interview during the 2026 World Cup, when he said he "wanted to fulfil his dream" of playing for Barcelona. The comments set off a transfer dispute that lasted throughout the summer window.

"It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I'd be angry, too. Especially given how they've supported me since I arrived," Alvarez said.

Home supporters have often booed him this season. After his goal on Saturday, however, parts of the crowd gave him a standing ovation, suggesting relations with the fans at the Metropolitano may be improving.

Alvarez signed for Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal worth up to 95 million euros ($111m). He scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for City, and has since netted 51 times in 115 games for Atletico.
