Residents of Birmingham faced a violent end to a Saturday night of celebration after a shooting broke out near Legion Field. The incident occurred during the Magic City Classic, a college football game between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. One person lost their life, and eight others sustained injuries.

Birmingham police Chief Michael Pickett stated that the violence happened after the game concluded. He noted that the main area of the shooting was outside the stadium grounds. Officer Darrell Freeman provided specific details on the timeline. He said that multiple gunshots were heard just after 7:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Grayman Avenue West. Responding officers found several victims who had been struck by gunfire.

Freeman confirmed the medical status of the injured. He reported that at least one victim died. One person is in critical condition, while seven others are listed as stable. Police secured the perimeter and collected physical evidence from the scene. Freeman said agents recovered multiple firearms and moved them to the evidence storage facility.

Authorities have detained one individual in connection with the attack. The suspect was transported to the Birmingham police station for questioning. Freeman described the investigation as ongoing, noting that new information is still emerging. The case remains open as detectives continue their work.

Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin addressed the public through social media. He said the community is hurt, shocked, and rightfully angry. Woodfin argued that no argument or misunderstanding justifies that level of senseless violence during a celebratory event. He expressed a determination to ensure the fear does not break the spirit of the local community.

The mayor emphasized the family traditions associated with the game. He stated that the city is mourning alongside its neighbors who are suffering unimaginable pain. Woodfin promised that the city would remain united to get through the tragic night. He added that officials would not stop their efforts until quick justice was served for the senseless violence.

The investigation continues as police work to determine the full sequence of events. The one detained suspect remains in custody at the Birmingham police station. The case is currently under active review by law enforcement.
