The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, hosts the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix this weekend. The venue has undergone major physical changes since the first race was held in 2012. It now operates as a diversified entertainment complex.
Hospitality structures have replaced open grassy banks around the track. A cable car connects the main paddock building to these new facilities. The complex includes two swimming pools for attendees.
The skyline surrounding the circuit now features rollercoasters and amusement rides. These additions support the venue's strategy to function as a theme park and concert venue alongside its racing operations.
The track design differs from temporary street circuits in Miami and Las Vegas. COTA is a permanent facility with wide run-off areas instead of concrete barriers. It includes elevation changes, braking zones, and mixed corner speeds.
Motorcycle racer Kevin Schwanz designed the track layout. Herman Tilke's company built the buildings and infrastructure. The venue also hosts World Endurance Championship and IMSA events, including the Lone Star Le Mans races in September.
