Joe Gomez scored the winning penalty for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round, ending a 279-game scoring drought and sending the club into the quarterfinals against Chelsea at Anfield. The victory came after a 1-1 draw that required a shootout to decide the winner.
Giorgi Mamardashvili was the decisive factor in the penalty phase. He stopped the attempt from Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha before Gomez struck his kick into the top corner. The sequence concluded the match after Wesley Fofana blasted his shot over the crossbar.
The first half saw both teams trade penalties. Ryan Gravenberch's challenge on Moisés Caicedo earned Chelsea a spot kick, which Morgan Rogers converted. Minutes later, Wesley Fofana handled the ball in the area, allowing Cody Gakpo to equalize from twelve yards. No other goals were recorded in the ninety minutes.
Manager Andoni Iraola made seven changes to the starting lineup from the 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, and Bradley Barcola began on the bench. This was the sixth match for Liverpool in a nine-game span covering 29 days.
Chelsea fielded a depleted squad, missing Cole Palmer who was serving a one-match suspension following his red card against Tottenham Hotspur. The absence of regular starters left the visitor without their primary attacking options for the tie.
The second half featured several defensive interventions. Mike Penders saved efforts from Ronald Araujo and substitute Bradley Barcola. Mamardashvili parried a drive from Marco Palestra. Home supporters celebrated specific plays, including a 40-yard sprint by Lewis Koumas to regain possession from Malo Gusto and an interception by Araujo in his own box.
Teenager Rio Ngumoha received chants as he won free kicks against his former club. Trey Nyoni, 19, left the field to a standing ovation when replaced by Alexis Mac Allister late in the game. The crowd maintained their support throughout the shootout, singing for each Liverpool player who stepped up to the spot.
Gomez described the match as massive for the club and the city. "It means everything to play for this club and we know every game, especially here, is massive for us," he told ITV. He noted the new management team's desire to display fight and grit, stating that players continued until the end.
Iraola emphasized the connection between the squad and the stands. "The players are feeling the support from those in the stands and when we are all together, we create an atmosphere," he said. He observed that the team felt encouraged even when trailing. He noted this was the third consecutive home game ending with a positive result and expressed hope for a fourth on Sunday.
Liverpool will face AFC Bournemouth in the quarterfinals. The team prepares for a Premier League match against champions Arsenal on Sunday. This contest represents a major test for the squad in the early stages of Iraola's tenure.
