Minnesota United entered the match with little margin for error, needing a result to stay within striking distance of the final Western Conference playoff slot. Sunday night, the Loons delivered that result with a 3-1 victory over LAFC at the opponents' home ground.
Joaquin Pereyra scored twice, while Cherrion Valerius added a goal to break a four-game scoring drought against this specific opponent. The result extends Minnesota's late-season surge to a 3-0-3 record over its last six matches. The Loons now hold 41 points, sitting two points behind Seattle Sounders and Colorado Rapids.
The decisive moment came during a five-minute stretch late in the first half when Minnesota capitalized on defensive errors. Pereyra opened the scoring in the 29th minute after collecting a loose ball in the box. He fired a left-footed shot into the right corner, catching LAFC off guard as they were slow to react to a deflection off Kelvin Yeboah's shoulder.
Valerius extended the lead shortly thereafter with his first goal in six starts. He volleyed a pass off Yeboah's head into the right corner. The rapid succession of goals shifted momentum entirely, despite LAFC holding a 22-6 advantage in total shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on target throughout the contest.
Goalkeeper Drake Callender made six saves to preserve the lead, preventing LAFC from equalizing until the 90th minute. By then, the result was effectively decided. Pereyra sealed the victory in the 80th minute with a blast into the lower left corner, finishing past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
LAFC ended a four-match unbeaten run (1-0-3) but had already secured a playoff berth. Frustration mounted for the home side, culminating in Igor Jesus slamming the ball into the turf to earn a yellow card from referee Joe Dickerson. The Loons now travel to San Jose on Saturday, where they must win and hope for losses by both Seattle and Colorado to claim the final spot.
