The Justice Department charged Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, with possessing child sexual abuse material. Federal agents arrested the 82-year-old in Florida on Friday. He faces one count of possession of child pornography under federal law.

Agents executed search warrants at two storage units rented by Markle. The FBI recovered approximately 78 items suspected to be child pornography. These items included film negatives showing an adult man with pre-pubescent girls who were naked. A witness examined the materials and identified the adult male in the photographs as Markle.

Markle is scheduled to appear in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa on Friday. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that the prosecution team will hold Markle accountable to the fullest extent of federal law. FBI Director Kash Patel issued a statement praising agents for quickly locating the explicit material and completing the arrest.

The federal case follows an investigation in the Philippines where authorities examined Markle's home. Philippine officials reported recovering thousands of photos featuring underage males and females. Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, previously denied the claims. Last month, he called the allegations sick lies.

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the specific details of the arrest. Meghan released a statement last month saying she was deeply distressed by the allegations. She noted that her relationship with her father has been limited and fraught in recent years. Markle did not attend their 2018 wedding due to media attention.

Meghan revealed she was informed of disturbing allegations against him in the past. British police confirmed that she received a letter in January 2019 containing claims about alleged offending outside the United Kingdom. The London Metropolitan Police stated they had not informed other law enforcement agencies about the letter at the time. The force has referred the matter to Britain's policing watchdog to review how the allegations were handled.

In her statement, Meghan described the scope of the findings as more sickening than she could have imagined. She explained that her decision to keep Prince Archie, age seven, and Princess Lilibet, age five, away from her father was made to protect them. The couple stepped back from royal duties in 2020 after a rift with the senior royal family. They moved to California and recently returned to Britain two months ago. Their children have since enrolled in schools in the country.
