Amazon has established a strict three calendar day window for customers to retrieve packages from its locker network, a policy that takes effect for orders placed in 2026. If a shopper misses this deadline, the company automatically returns the item and issues a refund.

The update affects more than 25,000 pickup locations across the United States. These self-service stations operate in grocery stores, convenience stores, shopping centers, and on over 500 college campuses where Amazon reported more than 750 locations in August 2026.

Customers do not pay a separate fee to use a locker, though standard shipping charges may still apply. Prime members pay $14.99 monthly or $139 annually for the service. Non-Prime customers can qualify for free shipping if their order meets a $35 minimum purchase threshold.

Eligibility for locker delivery depends on physical limits. A package must weigh less than 10 pounds and measure smaller than 16 by 12 by 14 inches. Items must be sold or fulfilled by Amazon to qualify for the option at checkout.

Shoppers must select the specific locker during the checkout process rather than manually entering the street address. Amazon provides a notification when the package is ready, which includes a six digit code, barcode, or app based access instructions. The pickup code allows access to the assigned compartment without requiring a driver's license.

Availability of lockers varies by region. Major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston offer multiple choices, while rural areas have fewer options. Some stations are open 24 hours a day, but others only operate when the host building is open.

The three day rule uses calendar days, meaning weekends and holidays count toward the limit. For example, if Amazon confirms delivery on a Monday, the package must be collected by Thursday. If a customer cannot reach the locker, they can send another person with the forwarded delivery confirmation and pickup instructions.

Amazon states that the service benefits apartment residents and workers with irregular schedules who may miss home deliveries. The company advises checking the specific deadline in the notification email rather than calculating an extension independently.
