Tarik Skubal is projected to become the highest-paid pitcher in Major League Baseball history, with an estimated contract value between $350 million and $500 million. This potential windfall would place his annual average value on par with star players like Shohei Ohtani and Zach Wheeler. The financial scale of the deal reflects the premium the market currently places on elite starting pitching.

The Chicago White Sox are identified as a leading candidate to secure Skubal’s services during the upcoming free agency period. This interest comes as the Dodgers, who acquired Skubal at the July trade deadline, miss the World Series. Skubal posted a 5-2 record with a 2.61 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 70-13 in 10 appearances for Los Angeles. His performance validated the team’s decision to add him mid-season.

Chicago presents a compelling alternative for the ace. After a record-breaking 41-121 campaign two years ago, the White Sox rebuilt their roster by shedding high-end commitments. The 2025 season marked a sharp turnaround, as the club finished second in the American League Central with an 84-78 record. They advanced to the postseason as a wild-card team and defeated the Houston Astros in their opening series. The organization has also demonstrated willingness to invest in talent, signing Munetaka Murakami to a two-year, $34 million deal last year.

The current White Sox pitching staff is anchored by young arms like Sean Burke, who has a 3.34 ERA, and Grant Taylor, who holds a 2.25 ERA. Adding a veteran leader of Skubal’s caliber would strengthen this rotation. Jim Bowden of The Athletic notes that Chicago has the financial flexibility to compete for the pitcher. This assessment assumes no lockout occurs on Dec. 1, which would suspend free agency negotiations.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have historically pursued high-profile free agents with aggressive offers. Dodgers owner Mark Walter indicated a continued strategy of paying top dollar to retain key talent. In an exclusive interview with The California Post, Walter stated his plan to hand out premium contracts to free agents. This approach suggests the Dodgers will remain in the bidding war despite the substantial cost.

Skubal’s status as the top free agent this offseason is nearly certain barring a labor stoppage. His two-time Cy Young Award history and recent statistical output have set the tone for the market. The competition between Chicago and Los Angeles will define the pricing structure for elite pitchers in the coming weeks.
