Ernie Johnson announced on Wednesday that he will leave 'Inside the NBA' after the current season concludes. The 70-year-old broadcaster stated that his decision was influenced by ongoing heart issues, including bypass surgery he underwent more than a year ago.
Johnson shared the news in a video posted to social media. He described his health challenges as a contributing factor to his exit. The host will remain with the program through the remainder of the year, including the March Madness tournament. He will also continue working on other projects for TNT and CBS.
Co-host Charles Barkley reacted to the announcement during Wednesday’s broadcast. The 63-year-old analyst fought back tears while addressing the studio. Barkley has worked alongside Johnson for 26 or 27 years. He described the experience as an honor and a privilege.
Barkley highlighted his long-standing relationship with the rest of the panel, including Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal. He also acknowledged the teams at Turner, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Skydance. Barkley called Johnson the unquestionable leader of the show.
The analyst noted that viewers frequently ask if Johnson is as good a person as he appears on television. Barkley answered that he is even better in person. He thanked Johnson for leading the group for so many years.
Johnson responded to the tribute with visible emotion. He said he had managed to hold everything together until that moment. Looking at Barkley, Johnson stated that the words meant the world to him.
Barkley previously told Bill Simmons that his tenure would end when Johnson’s did. He called them a package deal. Barkley said that unless Johnson changes his mind, the coming year will be his last with the show.
