Flavio Bolsonaro arrived in Miami on Wednesday morning, where he publicly claimed the title of Brazil's rightful leader despite losing the presidential election to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He stepped off a Gulfstream G400 with his wife and two daughters at Miami-Opa Locka airport.

The senator had left Brazil after the country's Supreme Court requested his passport surrender to restrict his travel. He has not conceded the result from Sunday's vote and has raised allegations of irregularities. In contrast, his political party has acknowledged the outcome, and international observers have rated the election as fair.

In a letter posted to social media, Bolsonaro addressed what he described as his 60 million supporters. He stated, "I am the leader and the criminals who stole Brazil's election are part of a criminal organization that has established a tyranny." He initially labeled himself the "elected president" in an earlier version of the post before revising the text.

Bolsonaro faces criminal investigations at the Supreme Court regarding alleged financial crimes. He has characterized these cases as a political witch hunt driven by left-leaning justices. His legal immunity from prosecution will lapse in February when his term as a senator concludes.

The senator had indicated on Monday that he intended to stay in Brazil to defend against what he called an attempt to intimidate him. He planned to hand over his passports and continue his defense. According to the AFP news agency, he traveled on his Italian citizenship, which remained valid even after his Brazilian and diplomatic passports were canceled.

His route included stops in Argentina and Ecuador before reaching Florida. The United States State Department has confirmed it will grant visas to Bolsonaro and his family. President Donald Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that he viewed the Brazilian vote as a very strange election.

This development may strain relations between the two largest nations in the Americas. Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio's father, moved to Florida after the 2022 election loss. The elder Bolsonaro is currently jailed in Brazil on charges of leading a conspiracy to retain power. During the recent campaign, Lula accused the Trump administration of coordinating with the Bolsonaro family to facilitate their return to office.
