The NFC East race has become unpredictable this season due to injuries and inconsistent play. Despite the chaos, the New York Giants currently lead the division with a 4-2-1 record. This standing places them two games ahead of the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders. The Philadelphia Eagles trail by three games.
The Giants took a week off following their overtime victory over the Houston Texans on the road. During that break, the rest of the division struggled. The Cowboys lost to the Arizona Cardinals after blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. Before this game, Dallas was 20-0-1 all-time when leading by 14 or more points in the fourth quarter.
On Sunday, the Commanders defeated the Eagles on national television. Washington took control of the game in the second quarter and held on for the win. The Eagles remain last in the division, burdened by an injury-riddled season and ongoing offensive issues. Washington will face the Los Angeles Rams, the Giants, and the Cincinnati Bengals in their next three games.
The Giants have faced their own turmoil this year. Quarterback Jaxson Dart was ruled out for the season after a Week 2 injury. Jameis Winston stepped in and guided the team to a 2-1-1 record. At the end of September, New York acquired J.J. McCarthy, who has started since then and led the team to its win in Houston.
Head coach John Harbaugh joined the staff to build a new culture within the squad. A different feel exists on the team this year, though the season is not over. The schedule ahead is difficult. New York plays the Eagles and Commanders in consecutive weeks. Later, they face the San Francisco 49ers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, and Detroit Lions.
The other three teams in the division face specific challenges. The Cowboys, Eagles, and Commanders all have questions to answer. In this chaotic season, the Giants have a clear opportunity to secure the division. They hold the lead and can lose it to any of the three teams behind them.
