Redner's Fresh Market entered the Wilmington market on Oct. 8, 2026, opening in a former Acme store at Kirkwood Plaza. The move places the Pennsylvania-based grocer in New Castle County for the first time and introduces a new store format called Fresh Market 2.0. This entry shifts the competitive balance in a corridor already saturated with major grocery chains and discount retailers.

The company had previously concentrated its Delaware operations in Kent and Sussex counties. Stores in Camden, Dover, Georgetown, Milford, and Lewes served those regions since the early 2000s, with the Lewes location opening in 2022. The Kirkwood Highway location marks the first time Redner's has targeted the densely populated Wilmington area, placing the brand within a short drive of the Pennsylvania and Maryland borders.

Before the opening, Redner's stated it would hire approximately 200 people for full- and part-time roles. These positions include cashiers, clerks, receivers, and managers working across first, second, and third shifts. The hiring adds to a workforce that participates in a unique ownership structure established in 1975.

That structure combines family ownership with an employee stock-ownership plan. Federal retirement-plan data for the 2025 plan year show 3,379 participants holding approximately $69.2 million in assets through the Redner's Employees Profit Sharing and Stock Ownership Plan. This model gives workers a financial stake in the company beyond their wages, a structure that is rare in an industry dominated by publicly traded chains and franchise operations.

Ryan Redner, president and CEO, described the new format as a blend of fresh foods, in-store eateries, and digital convenience. "We're thrilled to welcome the Wilmington community to our newest location and unveil our enhanced Fresh Market concept," he said. The store features specific prepared-food brands including Earl’s Smashburgers, Big Gary’s Famous Chicken, and Fisher’s Pier seafood. It also includes Marybakes bakery and Carnival Crush for fair-style foods.

The 52,000-square-foot space was rebuilt to emphasize restaurant-style offerings over traditional warehouse-style grocery space. Retail islands sell artisanal cheeses, store-made fresh mozzarella, and organic products. This approach reflects a multi-year strategy that began with the first Fresh Market concept in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, in 2019. The Lewes store in 2022 was the first new-build Fresh Market, while the Wilmington location is the first to use the 2.0 design.

Redner's currently operates 44 grocery stores and 24 Quick Shops across Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. The company has not announced whether additional New Castle County stores are planned. The Kirkwood Highway location serves as a test of whether the employee-owned model and prepared-food strategy can succeed in one of the state's most competitive retail markets.

The store is located at 4365 Kirkwood Highway in Kirkwood Plaza. It opened on Oct. 8, 2026, and offers a mix of standard grocery items and multiple prepared-food concepts.
