The release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day transformed Sony Pictures Entertainment's financial results for the fiscal second quarter. Operating income for the film unit jumped 525% to $581 million compared to the same period last year. Total company sales rose 37% to $3.23 billion over that three-month stretch ending September 30, 2026.
Revenue from the motion pictures division specifically climbed 155% to $1.82 billion. The studio attributed this growth to the box office success of the new Spider-Man film, alongside the international release of Evil Dead Burn and domestic releases of Insidious: Out of the Further and Resident Evil. Theatrical revenues alone increased by 1,020% during the quarter.
The strong performance in film masked declines in other parts of the business. Revenue for the television production unit fell 31% to $483 million from $701 million a year earlier. The TV unit included income from new seasons of Outlander: Blood of My Blood, My Life with the Walter Boys, and Dark Matter. It also drew from long-running broadcasts such as Jeopardy!, Wheel of Fortune, and Shark Tank.
The media networks division, which includes the anime streaming service Crunchyroll, saw revenue drop 2% to $896 million. The company reported having 38 television channels and noted that Crunchyroll had over 21 million paid subscribers as of March 2026. Looking ahead, the studio faces a softer outlook for the next quarter due to poor box office performance from The Social Reckoning and Klara and the Sun, though it anticipates strong results from Jumanji: Open World releasing on Christmas Day.
Sony Music Entertainment posted Q2 revenue of $3.72 billion, an 11.25% increase from the prior year. Michael Jackson's Thriller remained a top global seller following the release of a biopic, finishing as the second best-selling project for the quarter. ATEEZ's GOLDEN HOUR: Part.5 was the top seller. Other notable performers included albums by Ella Langley, Bad Bunny, SZA, Shakira, and Beyoncé.
The Game & Network Services unit, led by PlayStation, increased revenue by 8.56% to $7.59 billion. Hardware sales for the PlayStation 5 totaled 2.6 million units in the quarter, a 36.43% decrease from the previous year. However, monthly active users on PlayStation Network grew 6.72% to 127 million. Cumulative PS5 sales reached 93.7 million units as of March 31, 2026. The company's only new first-party video game released in 2026, Marvel's Wolverine, has sold 2.4 million units.
Sony executives indicated that the company is well-positioned to benefit from the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI by Take-Two Interactive later this year. The film division's massive profit spike stands out against the modest declines in television and network revenues, marking a distinct shift in the company's quarterly earnings structure.
