CJ Miller and Autavius Ison drove the Toledo Rockets to a 20-17 win over Sacramento State on Wednesday night in Sacramento, California.
The Rockets, now 7-2, used a powerful rushing performance to overcome a 10-7 deficit at halftime. Miller finished with 135 yards on the ground, while Ison added 101 rushing yards and a touchdown. The team recorded 230 total yards on the ground, a stark contrast to the Sacramento State Hornets, who managed only eight rushing yards.
Toledo controlled the late stages of the game. Reice Griffith kicked two field goals, and Ison scored on a 19-yard run in the third quarter. These plays built a 20-10 lead for the Rockets deep into the fourth quarter.
Sacramento State, falling to 2-8, launched a 12-play, 75-yard drive in the final minutes. Jamar Curtis capped the effort with a 3-yard rushing touchdown, but the score change left just two minutes on the clock. The Hornets recovered the ball at their own 16-yard line with 55 seconds remaining. They gained only a few yards before stopping on fourth down, ending their chance to tie the game.
The passing game offered little help for either side. Toledo quarterback John Alan Richter completed passes for just 60 yards. Sacramento State quarterbacks Jackson Sharman and Brian Salazar Jr. combined for 216 passing yards, but the team relied heavily on the air attack due to a stalled ground game.
The Hornets honored Native American Heritage Day by wearing uniforms created with the Wilton Rancheria tribe. The game also marked Senior Day, as the team recognized 27 graduating players before their final home contest this season.
