The selection of the Towson University marching band for the upcoming Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade represents a rare distinction for a public institution in Baltimore County. The news arrived on October 24, 2026, during the university's homecoming football game against Hampton University. Band members learned of their selection on Saturday afternoon, a moment that concluded the academic year's most visible performance season.
Towson's ensemble will join a small group of bands chosen each year for the nationally televised event. The university's president, Mark Ginsberg, described the choice as an extraordinary achievement for the students and directors. He noted in a statement that the selection recognizes years of hard work, artistic excellence, and dedication from the entire university community. The band has not performed in the parade since 2009, making this their first return in nearly two decades.
The scale of the event requires extensive logistical planning. Last year's broadcast reached 34.3 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, setting a record for combined audience size. More than 3.5 million spectators attended the in-person festivities in New York City. Towson's director of athletic bands, Taylor Yozwiak, confirmed that preparations will begin immediately. The group must coordinate travel, lodging, meals, and equipment for a large contingent of student musicians.
Approximately 225 students comprise the marching band. Participation is open to all students, not just music majors, and recipients earn between $500 and $1,000 in scholarship funds for the fall semester. Yozwiak emphasized that the opportunity is the culmination of dedication from staff and the broader band community. He stated that being invited back is an incredible honor and a testament to the passion and talent of the band members.
The band is now seeking donations to cover the costs associated with the trip. These funds will support transportation and other necessities for the students. The university previously sent the ensemble to perform at the 2018 and 2022 Veterans Day Parades in New York City. They also played at the 2024 grand opening of the Under Armour Global Headquarters in Baltimore and performed alongside Norwegian DJ Kygo at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
Ginsberg added that the selection is a recognition of the university's community. Yozwiak expressed excitement about representing Towson University and sharing the group's unique performance style with audiences across the country. The band's schedule will shift from local games to national events as they prepare for the November 2027 parade.
