A former Royal Australian Air Force pilot is standing trial in Brisbane after pleading not guilty to the murder of his wife. The case began Monday in the Supreme Court, where prosecutors argue Robert John Crawford killed Frances Elizabeth Crawford and then manipulated the scene to make it appear accidental.

Frances Crawford died on July 29, 2024, at the couple's rural property in Upper Lockyer, west of Toowoomba. Investigators found her body next to a ride-on lawnmower at the bottom of a retaining wall. Prosecutor Chris Cook told the jury that Crawford acted during a period of severe strain in their marriage. Justice Lincoln Crowley outlined the prosecution's theory, stating that the defense will contend she died from either strangulation or blunt-force trauma.

The state presents financial pressure as a primary motive. According to court documents, the marriage was near its end, and Crawford faced substantial losses in a divorce settlement. Cook alleged that Crawford wanted to retain the family home and prevent his wife from receiving a share of his superannuation. The prosecutor also described Crawford as maintaining a double life, contrasting his public persona of strong Christian values with private behavior. Cook characterized the accused as a love rat and noted that four women with whom he allegedly had affairs are expected to testify.

Evidence suggests Frances Crawford was undecided about ending the marriage. She reportedly gave her husband a chance to prove his commitment to her and their children. The court heard that she established strict boundaries, listing sexual or emotional infidelity, pornography, and masturbation as grounds for divorce if violated.

The jury will visit the crime scene on Wednesday to examine the location where the alleged killing occurred. Justice Crowley stated that the site visit would help the jurors understand the physical evidence presented during the trial. The defense has not yet delivered an opening statement.

The trial is scheduled to last approximately three weeks. Prosecutors plan to call up to 47 witnesses to present their case to the jury.
