A shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store in Northern California left one person dead and six others wounded, according to police in Fairfield.

The gunfire began at about 8:30 p.m. Friday inside the seasonal store, which sells costumes and decorations, at the Solano Town Center. The Fairfield Police Department described the incident in a statement posted to Facebook on Saturday.

Investigators said the shooting "stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect." No arrests have been made. Authorities said they were reviewing video and other evidence to identify the person responsible for what they called a "heinous act of violence."

Three of the wounded were in critical condition, police said. The scene remained active, and detectives were interviewing witnesses. The department said it would not release further information at this time.

Police acknowledged the worry the shooting has caused in the community, noting that many Halloween events and celebrations were planned for Saturday. "We understand that an incident of this nature is frightening and deeply unsettling," the department said. It urged residents to stay vigilant, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity.

Solano Town Center, which has 130 stores and restaurants, stayed open on Saturday. However, the mall canceled its trick-or-treating event that had been scheduled for later in the day, citing the previous night's shooting. "We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time," the mall said in a statement.

The FBI's Sacramento office said it is assisting Fairfield police with the investigation.

Fairfield is a city of about 120,000 residents. It sits roughly 37 miles (60 kilometers) southwest of Sacramento, about halfway between that city and San Francisco.
