Joe Fagnano will start for the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 25-year-old quarterback takes over the offense after injuries sidelined both Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley. Head coach Jesse Minter confirmed the decision on Tuesday.
Fagnano made his NFL debut during last Sunday's 36-10 loss to Buffalo. He entered the game after Jackson left with a thumb injury and Huntley exited with a toe problem. In that first appearance, the rookie completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw one interception. He has also recovered from ankle discomfort before this week's matchup.
The quarterback entered the league as an undrafted free agent from UConn and Maine. He earned a spot on the 53-man roster through strong preseason play. The Ravens have not specified when Jackson will undergo surgery or the exact length of his absence. The team expects the injury to keep him out for a long period.
With a short week of preparation, Baltimore added Kedon Slovis to the roster. Slovis joins Fagnano and Austin Reed in the quarterback rotation. The team also placed kicker Tyler Loop on the injured list with a groin issue.
The injury pile has forced immediate changes to the offensive unit. Fagnano faces his first start under the pressure of a compressed schedule and a depleted depth chart.
